(More customer reviews)I am an enthusiast of flashlights and was interested in finding diffused-type of lighting in the form of lanterns. After some online research, I decided to pick up the Zelco Pocket Fluorescent Lantern and couple of Energizer Weather-Ready Spot and Area Flashlights for the CCFT light. This is a review of the Zelco Pocket Fluorescent Lantern.
Batteries: I only focus on lanterns that run on AA or AAA batteries, have smooth or diffused outputs (mainly fluorescents), and are efficient. This lantern takes four AA batteries.
Efficiency: During tests, I usually got approximately 4 hours of constant lighting per set of batteries. This compares to 8 hours in the Energizer Weather-Ready CCFT.
Output: The fluorescent light has a soft, diffused, area-type of light that is adequate for a bedroom. Remember, this is only a six-inch fluorescent tube powered by four AA batteries, so do not expect a brightly lit bedroom as in a regular lamp. However, the light is adequate. Compared to the Energizer CCFT, this Zelco fluorescent is a bit brighter, though not a lot. I do not care for the uneven, streaked lighting of LED-type lanterns. Though they are efficient, they lack the smooth and evenly diffused lighting of fluorescents or CCFTs. Incandescent lanterns are inefficient and do not have as much of a diffused, smooth output.
Build: My expectations of build quality in lanterns are not as high as flashlights, which are typically anodized aluminum, shock proof, and waterproof. There are no lanterns that I have owned or researched that claimed to be shock or waterproof. However, this lantern does appear to be susceptible to drops, in which it appears likely to break. If rain got to the lantern, water might seep inside the casing.
Overall, the Zelco Pocket Fluorescent Lantern is a useful area light that appears to be able to brighten room adequately and is of moderate build quality. I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5.0. This lantern would hold more value if it were a bit more efficient and had casing that was more durable and sealed better from the elements. One thing that helped the rating was the fact that this is the only fluorescent lantern that I could find that uses AA batteries. All other fluorescent lanterns either used C, D, or special batteries.
